Age Calculation Across Cultures
Age can be calculated differently depending on cultural systems. This calculator uses the most common age system, where age increases on a person’s birthday. For instance, someone who is 3 years and 11 months old will turn 4 on their next birthday. This method is widely used in Western countries.
In some cultures, age is counted differently. For example:
- Traditional Chinese Age System: People are born at age 1, and their age increases at the Chinese New Year instead of their birthday. A baby born a day before the New Year will be considered 2 years old two days later.
- Including the Current Year: In some cultures, a person aged 20 is also referred to as being in their 21st year of life.
Handling Month-End Dates
Month-end calculations can sometimes be confusing due to varying month lengths. For example:
- From Feb. 20 to Mar. 20 is one month.
- From Feb. 28, 2022, to Mar. 31, 2022:
- If Feb. 28 to Mar. 28 is counted as one month, the result is 1 month and 3 days.
- If Feb. 28 and Mar. 31 are treated as month-end dates, the result is 1 month.
